CONCERN OVER FOREIGNER GETTING CITIZENSHIP

Police are on look out and form a task force to tackle problem.
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah police are investigating a chamber of commerce that is accused of helping Indian nationals obtain Malaysian citizenship through the backdoor. Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Noor Rashid Ibrahim said they were taking the reports of such claims seriously and would be calling in various individuals within the organisation to establish if there were any truth to the allegations.
“Before any action is taken, we have to make sure that the report is true and was not done with other motives,” he told reporters after closing the Crime Prevention seminar here.
“This sort of investigations needs to follow procedures that will take some time as we have to work with Immigration and National Registration Department. We have to find out if the claims have any basis,” he added.
On the other hand, Police are probing allegations that Malaysian passports are being misused by irresponsible persons including terrorists.
The allegations were highlighted during an Interpol (world’s largest international police organisation) conference attended by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Musa Hassan in Russia recently.
Speaking to reporters after launching a crime prevention seminar here yesterday, Deputy IGP
Tan Sri Ismail Omar said the Interpol conference heard that quite a number of Malaysian passports were found to be used by irresponsible people in other parts of the world “and this has marred Malaysia’s image”.
“As such we are investigating. We want to know who are the people, if local syndicates are cooperating with are international syndicates, what are they doing, what is the objective of the misuse of passports and how many are actually involved,” he said.
Ismail also pointed out that if the matter was not addressed, it would give an impression that there were many syndicates in Malaysia that were out of control. According to him, two task forces in Bukit Aman (national police HQ) – one headed by the IGP and the other by him – had been formed to tackle the problem.
Last week, a businessman lodged a police report against the organisation claiming that they were bringing in Indian nationals as restaurant workers but later helped them obtain MyKads.
Two other similar reports were lodged this week.
