HAVANA-Cuban leader Fidel Castro has praised the new US President Barack Obama, calling him 'a living symbol of the American Dream'.
"The intelligent and noble face of the first black president of the United States since its founding... has transformed itself under the inspiration of Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King to become a living symbol of the American Dream," Fidel Castro wrote in an article on Thursday.
Fidel Castro, an outspoken critic of former president George W. Bush's policies, has been complimentary of Obama in his two latest pieces.
He praised Obama for ordering the closure of the Guantanamo Bay prison, constructed by the Bush administration to house and try men suspected of terrorist activities.
"Nobody could doubt the sincerity of his words when he affirmed that he would convert his country into a model of liberty, respect for human rights in the world and the independence of other peoples," said Castro.
However, Fidel Castro interjected a note of skepticism, asking what Obama will do 'when the immense power he has taken in his hands is absolutely useless to overcome the unsolvable, antagonistic contradictions of the (US) system?'
Meanwhile, Cuban President, Raul Castro adds , Barack Obama seems like a good guy, and his brother Fidel says no one can doubt his sincerity.
The new U.S. president wants to sit down and negotiate, and is in a better position to do so than any other since Eisenhower.
