MSIA BACK PHILIPPINE FOR OIC OBSERVER

Labels:
DAMASCUS, Syria: Malaysia is throwing its support behind the Philippines' bid to gain an observer status in the 57-member Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC).
This was disclosed by Malaysian Foreign Minister Datuk Anifah Aman at the 36th Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) of the OIC which opened in the Syrian capital Saturday.
"The government of Malaysia supports the admission of the government of the Republic of the Philippines as an observer to the OIC," he said in his statement delivered at the gathering.
The proposal to accept the request by the Philippines over the OIC observer status came from Indonesia.
"We also urge the intergovernmental group of experts on the rules of procedures to complete its work urgently to consider other pending applications," said Anifah who is leading the Malaysian delegation to the three-day CFM meeting.
Philippine government officials had previously said that an observer status in the OIC, which the country started seeking in 2003, was essential to bringing peace and development in Mindanao.
