TYPHON MUIJA AND NOCK-TEN BATTER PHILIPPINES, KILLING 87 PEOPLE

MANILA, Philippines - 87 people were killed as two typhoons simultaneously devastated the Philippines at opposite ends in the span of a week, disaster officials and weathermen said. They added that rains would continue until Saturday with the arrival of another storm from the north.
Typhoon Muija remained stationed on the country's eastern seaboard, said undersecretary Benito Ramos, head of coordinating agency, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
  • Nearly 800 evacuated their homes Tuesday along one of Manila's rivers as waters rose to dangerous levels. The Marikina River is notorious for flooding and residents voluntarily took shelter in schools.
  • Meanwhile typhoon Nock-ten made landfall in northern Luzon before leaving for the South China Sea on the west on Saturday.
  • Fatalities in the two typhoons were 87 in total, Ramos said, adding the figure was expected to rise. Nearly 1,000 people died in and around Manila in 2009 during the heaviest rainfall in decades following several powerful typhoons.
