BRAZIL FACES FLOODS AND PROTEST ON THE EVE OF WORLD CUP FIRST MATCH

Labels:

As Brazil is hosting the soccer matches of the World Cup, more than 33,000 people flee disastrous floods in Brazil’s southern state of Parana. Evacuatating  their homes and  taking refuge with relatives or in shelters.11 people are reported killed so far.
Nearly 500 people were evacuated in Curitiba, the state’s capital that also serves as the base camp for defending cup champions Spain, who arrived on Sunday.
Authorities had reported nine deaths over the weekend. Most of the victims are in the interior of the state.
The flooding has affected the homes of half a million people to various degrees, civil defense officials said.
Meanwhile, striking airport ground staff in Rio de Janeiro blocked the road leading to the city’s international airport Thursday, as Brazil prepared to host the opening match of the World Cup.
The protesting workers, who have declared a 24-hour partial strike, invaded Avenida Vinte de Janeiro and managed to completely close it in one direction before military police intervened and partially reopened the road, said news website G1.
TV images showed around workers in red T-shirts and carrying red banners flooding onto the busy road and forcing drivers to stop, causing a long traffic jam to form.
  • Some passengers could be seen getting out of their vehicles and running toward the airport to catch their flights.
