JAYA, Malaysia - On Friday, Bernama reported that the government will be
studying the possibility of shutting down Facebook as there have been many
cases of misuse.
Malaysian Communication
and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek(photo) reportedly said 2,000 reports against Facebook postings received by the
ministry.
Ahmad Shabery said he was aware that it would be impossible to close the
social website as there were 15 million Malaysian accounts compared
with 2,000 reports of abuse."Many businesses are also using Facebook, others to forge family ties and have nothing to do with politics... and the complaints received were around 2,000 only. Should we shut it down because of 2,000 reports? We need to re look this”, he said.
Commenting on the action of an individual who insulted Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah on Facebook site, Ahmad Shabery said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) was working with police to track down the individual.
Facebook is banned in countries such as North Korea and Iran
while China, Egypt and Pakistan have previously banned the social networking
site, although the bans did not last.Many users also pointed out that Facebook is a platform used by many not only to share their thoughts and ideas, but also to stay connected with friends and family, conduct businesses and disseminate important information fast and effectively.
