10 HELD FOR KILLING PANDA AND SELLING ITS MEAT IN CHINA

BEIJING, China – Ten people who killed a giant panda and sold its meat in southwest China’s Yunnan province have been detained by the police, China Central Television reports.
The police also seized a piece of panda skin, 9.75kg of panda meat, two leg bones, two pieces of skull and a gall-bladder.
The incident has sparked outrage as state-run media posted the news, along with several pictures on its official China Twitter-like Weibo account.
It was reported the female panda was killed on December 4 last year.
A topic titled “Giant Panda hunted” has been created and drawn more than 220,000 hits. Over 700 discussions have taken place.
Most of the netizens denounced the ruthless killing of the panda, while some called for more animal protection measures in the country.
The endangered giant panda, dubbed China’s “national treasure” is among one of the first-class protection animals in the country.
An investigation released by China’s State Forestry Administration (SFA) showed only 1,864 giant pandas were living in the wild in China at end 2013.
Giant panda numbers have risen by 17% in the past decade, an increase from around 1,000 in the late 1970s, a statement posted on the World Wildlife Fund for Nature
